Outdoor PE Game - "Wolf and Sheep"

Objectives:
Have fun running around. Chase other students (like "tag"). Practice using verbs and vocabulary words.

Setup and materials:
This game should be played as a class or a group outside. All the students will stand in a circle holding hands (these students are the "sheep"). One student will stand in the middle (this student is the "wolf").

How to play:
Before playing, the teacher will decide on a phrase that the class (sheep) will use (something related to the vocab you are learning for the week). The students will call out the "wolf's" name twice, then say a phrase that will include a verb, and will allow for the "wolf" to answer. Here are some same examples:

  • (Name, name,) what are you eating? (I am eating pizza.)
  • (Name, name,) what are you wearing (I am wearing pants.)
  • (Name, name,) what are you thinking of (I am thinking of a pencil.)
  • (Name, name,) where are you going? (I am going to the school.)
The teacher will also decide on a keyword. This word is important because it will let the students know when they should run. For example, if the teacher gives the key word to be "skirt," this could be an example:
  • Sheep: Bobby, Bobby, what are you wearing?
  • Wolf (Bobby): I am wearing pants.
  • Sheep: Bobby, Bobby, what are you wearing?
  • Wolf: I am wearing gloves.
  • Sheep: Bobby, Bobby, what are you wearing?
  • Wolf: I am wearing a hat.
  • Sheep: Bobby, Bobby, what are you wearing?
  • Wolf: I am wearing a skirt.
After the "wolf" says "skirt," all of the "sheep" will run away from the "wolf." If the "wolf" touches a "sheep," then the "sheep" becomes the next "wolf" and all of the students return to the circle and begin again.

Safety precautions:
You will probably want to set boundaries so that the students don't go too far or too fast. You can let the students know that if they are unwilling to stay within the boundaries, then they will not be participating in the game.

Here is an animated Powerpoint to help explain this game to your students.
